What is phentermine?

Phentermine is a stimulant taken by mouth. It’s an appetite suppressant designed to maximize weight loss, helping overweight and obese individuals meet their goals. This medication has been available for short-term obesity management since 1959, when it first received FDA approval. 

Phentermine is sold under the brand name of Ionamin®, among others. It’s also available as a combination: phentermine/topiramate. Topiramate is a migraine and epilepsy medication that’s been approved for chronic weight management in obese individuals.
